What to Expect
Diagnosis
On arrival, we determine the cause of tooth ache, take necessary X-rays and discuss the best treatment option for you. You will sign the necessary consent forms for the procedure recommended.
Pain Free Visit
Your dentist at Yorktowne Dental Group will discuss the procedure with you including options of local anesthesia in combination with nitrous oxide or oral sedatives.
Procedure
You will get the tooth extraction done, you’ll be asked to bite down on gauze pack for about an hour to limit bleeding and promote blood clot formation. The dentist may recommend putting bone graft at the extraction site based on the individual needs of that area and might put sutures to seal the extraction site.
After Care
You will be send home with some extra gauze, necessary prescriptions and post op instructions in writing. We will see you for the follow up in 7-10 days to make sure you are healing well and to remove sutures if needed.
Post-Extraction Care
It’s normal to experience some soreness and swelling for 24-72 hours following the procedure. The extent of discomfort depends on the nature of the extraction and health of the surrounding tissue and bone. However, most extractions are well-tolerated and heal quickly. Care for the site to ensure speedy healing with the following tips:
- Avoid drinking through a straw and spitting.
- Refrain from smoking for at least 24 hours.
- Eat soft foods and avoid chewing near the extraction site until it’s comfortable to do so.
- Take pain medication and antibiotics as prescribed by the dentist.
- Use an ice pack as needed.
- Continue to brush normally, but use care to avoid disturbing the extraction site.
